Coyner Springs Park
Coyner Springs Park is a rustic park home to wildlife like squirrels, woodpeckers, deer, foxes, and even red-tailed hawks! So it’s not unusual to share the city’s fresh air with the numerous wildlife it offers. This beautiful and serene park has a lot of nature trails, a vast picnic area, a leash-free dog park, a 9-hole disc golf course, and incredible settings for recreational activities like jogging and kite flying.
The park’s Dog Recreation Area is an outdoor space used by pets and their owners to have a fun experience. What makes Coyner Springs Park Dog Area different from other Dog Parks is that this park allows off-leash dogs. And in addition to offering open spaces for exercising fou-legged visitors, the Dog Recreational Area provides opportunities for dogs and owners to socialize with each other.
Throughout the year, Coyner Springs Park can produce unique birding and wildlife-watching opportunities in rare habitats within the City of Waynesboro limits. The few islands of scrub, the dense bushes along the periphery, and the small trees sprinkled throughout the field can be great for spotting Savannah, Fox, and Field Sparrows in the winter and occasional warblers during migration.
If you follow the path as it loops right and downhill to a large pavilion, there’s a wooded marshy area. This area holds some of the most reliable habitats in the city for Field Sparrows and Swamps and holds potential for Easter Screech-Owl, Barred Owl, and Red-headed Woodpecker. The Virginia Wildlife Center occasionally releases rehabilitated birds here, as it did in 2013 with a female Peregrine Falcon. If you visit this area, be prepared to get your feet wet since there are no maintained trails in this area.
